It uses Internet Protocol Security (IPSec) to add an extra layer of protection at the Transport Level. This combination is often called L2TP/IPSec, and it’s what makes the protocol a more robust alternative to PPTP. However, L2TP must be supported by both the client and the server, but it is supported natively by most Windows systems.

Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP)

This is a newer technology that uses the HTTPS protocol to facilitate the encapsulation and encryption of data moving through the network. The advantage of this protocol is that it can get past certain firewalls and web proxies that have been known to block PPTP and L2TP traffic.

The data is encapsulated with the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) channel of the HTTPS protocol, which allows the VPN server to use stronger authentication methods that allow for better key negotiation, encryption, and integrity checking.

SSTP uses Port 443 of the TCP protocol, which is where the tunnel of communication is managed. It’s also where the encapsulation and encryption processes take place.
